Atlantic Librarians

One thing that Ning lets you do is add RSS feeds to your network. Currently, I have added two: 1) Library Journal news and 2) Del.icio.us bookmarks for the "Library 2.0" tag.

While the former is probably familiar to most of you, the latter may not be. Basically, del.icio.us is a social bookmarking tool where people can share bookmarks publically and/or read the book marks of other people who have chosen to share their bookmarks.

People can also "tag" a bookmark with a name familiar to them. The bookmarks can then be retrieved via these tags (and sent out to an RSS feed). Perhaps there is a better tag to use for this group? I tried "atlantic_canada" to disappointing results. nova_scotia, new_brunswick, newfoundland and PEI are all available, but four different feeds could get harry. I may be able to code a feed that retrieves all four of these tags. Stay tuned!

Let me know if you have any other ideas for feeds. I thought the career beacon emails I get for librarian jobs could be a nice one, but there are no RSS feeds available for that yet.

I'm also hearing that a wiki feature may be available for Ning in the future. I think this would be a great thing -- consider, for instance, using a wiki to share leads to local history resources & information. There are lots of possibilities for this space, it all depends on how we all want to use it!
