The Other Librarian (my Other Blog)

Three Briefs About Your Web Presence

I had three brief things come to mind, neither of which really need a whole post to describe.   I’ve been thinking what works for a web presence in a Microblog world, and what real competitive advantages & disadvantages websites have over other media. Are You Ready for Your Blog? One of the things that is overstated about [...]

Pride Week in Halifax

Based on feedback from my survey, I know that most of you do not need or care for information about local (to me) community.   That makes total sense, and please bear with me — I have a tutorial coming on relational databases very soon. That said, I still want to draw people’s attention that this week [...]

Halifax Rentals Go Viral

UPDATE:   I HAZ Embed Code now! Killam Properties (the people who run Quinpool Tower) team up with Picnic Face ( the people behind the PowerThirst Video ) to bring you Landlord Lou, the only sane presence in a world full of murderous property thugs, annoying roomates and er, WTH?   a dancing panda?   (I’m not mentioning [...]

There’s a New Wiki in Town: Wikifax Bursts into Action!

In my many travels around town, I’ve been hearing that “this town needs some site where we people can easily make announcements, show their worth, and generally inform people about our home town.”    The idea of a wiki came up in this regard more than once. Two elements have been missing where I live (Halifax, Nova [...]

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips for Libraries

After seredipitously encountering an Search Engine Optimization (SEO) victory (my wife searched for events happening on a major street in my city and our events page turned up #1), I’m feeling pretty good about the library website.   That does not mean that we cannot improve however, so I thought I’d blog about it a bit. Now, [...]

Future Development for the Network

One thing that Ning lets you do is add RSS feeds to your network. Currently, I have added two: 1) Library Journal news and 2) Del.icio.us bookmarks for the "Library 2.0" tag.

While the former is probably familiar to most of you, the latter may not be. Basically, del.icio.us is a social bookmarking tool where people can share bookmarks publically and/or read the book marks of other people who have chosen to share their bookmarks.

People can also "tag" a bookmark with a name fami… Continue

New Look!

Thanks to Donna Bourne-Tyson, we have a new look. A nice foggy picture of Hubbards, NS is a great way to add an east coast flavour to the site. Thanks Donna!

That said, I don't want to be accused of being "Nova-centric." So, if you got a good picture you want to share, let me know and I'll create a banner out of it for a while. Or if you don't want me doing a hack job of your photo, why not just add it to your "photos" and share it to the front page.

I see that people have alre… Continue

Any Joomla Users out there?

If any of you follow my blog, you already know that I invite people to my test server to "play around" with Joomla, a popular open-source Content Management System. Basically, Joomla is a quick way to get alot of your functions typically desired in websites these days (RSS, blog-like posts, polls, other do-dads etc.).

It's also pretty neat that you can integrate MediaWiki into it as well.

Anyway, drop me a line if you want to play around with a CMS and see how it works fro… Continue

Rats -- no go with Career Beacon yet. Maybe for the future though.

Hi Ron -- thanks for chiming in on this one. Ideally, it would be nice if we could get alot of people here, whether they create a profile or not. For instance, I think it would be great if I could grab RSS feeds from the mailing lists for NSLA, HLA & APLA and the Atlantic Canadian chapters of other orgs as well. That way people could see what's going on in the Atlantic Provinces library world on one or two pages.

Actually -- now that I think of it, I wonder if I can mine Career Beacon to this group. I'll give it a shot!

Hi Patricia,

Getting in touch with librarians "back home" seems like a great way to use this space! Don't forget to invite people you think might be interested in this.
